The Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness of Montana is not that big! So if you are looking for something with lots of space to do some extraordinary distance traveling, I do not recommend coming to this Wilderness. However, if it is climbing, incredible views, snow, ice, goats, wolves, and an occasional grizzly bear, this might be the one for you.
There is another item I would like to mention as a reason not to come to the Pintlars. Winter. I strongly recommend staying out of this Wilderness during the cold season. Just for starters, winter in Montana's backcountry comes with a terrible attitude. Nor does one come to the Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness and just sashay on up to the trailhead like it is summertime. It requires work and time from where the vehicle is parked and where the trailhead starts.
Then there is the APW's very own special bag of charms waiting for the fool who would want to romance her. Here are a few of them; deeper than normal snowpack, trailheads that start above 6000 feet of elevation, normal sized peaks that on the average peel away the 10,000 feet mark, the Big Hole Valley's reputation for cold temperatures . . . only colder. The list continues, but I believe I just gave the top four bad boys.

Recommendation: Don't go in during the winter! Summer is just fine and I can prove it! Stare-on!
If you insist though, who am I, but someone that might understand the desire you have. Nevertheless, you might want to consider studying my experiences (mistakes) on this web site. With several trips into the Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness during the winter, I might have some info you could use. On the other hand, the reader might want to leave the ridiculously hard work in my hands and just enjoy the virtual trips into Montana's winterized Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness.
I will do what I can to show you the trips through my writing and the photos, plus stay alive through the process. It costs me lots to get there and back again, despite residing in Western Montana. Consequently, I have to charge you to come on this virtual trip with me. I think you will find it worth it enough to come again and again on some of my other trips. rgl
