This beargrass bloom was on the summit of Boulder Pass (7,400 feet) inside the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness of Montana and Idaho. The view shows Boulder Creek canyon at dawn and after a night of rain. The Sam Billings Memorial Campground in Montana is 11 miles east and down this canyon, while Paradise Guard Station in Idaho is 22 miles west of the pass. Almost six years later I would spend another night on this pass, but with a very different view. Boulder Pass would be buried under 10 to 25 feet of snowpack.
