Near Blodgett Pass in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness of Montana and Idaho, another snowstorm rolled down Blodgett Creek Canyon as I continued a westward crossing of the great wilderness. To get through the deep powder using a set of backcountry snowshoes, I had to drop the 80 pound pack, posthole a trail, come back and tote the load up the new trail, then start all over again. In this manner I traveled 50 miles for 16 days before arriving at the Lochsa Lodge located on Highway 12 in Idaho. My forward progress equaled about three miles a day. The next summer, my wife and I would walk 27 miles of the same route in four days-two of those days were through a very serious timber fall.
