Glacier National Park

Chief Mountain, Glacier National Park, Montana

In Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Nation, Chief Mountain (9,089 feet) emerged from a two day snowstorm. The warm moisture in the cloud around the mountain was being pushed south by the intensifying Arctic cold that would almost take my life 36 hours later. I was singing when I took this photo. Less than two hours later, with the temperature again dropping below 0° Fahrenheit, I would break through the ice on Belly River. By the time I stopped one and one half hours later and in mid-afternoon, the temperature was approximately -10° Fahrenheit and still falling.
