Granite Park Chalet inside Glacier National Park is partially buried in a heavy snowpack. The tracks coming from behind and alongside the chalet were not mine . . . nor even another human’s. They were made by a bear as the large beast made its way down from a winter den during the month of April. In a six day roundtrip from Avalanche Campground to Ahern Pass I crossed the paths of three bears headed for the low country, two grizzly and one black bear.
