Montana's Continental Divide

Montana's share of the Continental Divide is substantial with approximately 900 miles curling like a writhing snake between the Wyoming and Canadian borders. To travel the distance requires a sizable precommitment of time and preparation.

At this point I realize there might be some who are reading this and thinking my information is old hat and well known, since many travel the route every year, and not just in Montana, but the entire Continental Divide Trail from New Mexico to Canada.

Yeah, well I am not talking about a summer trip . . .

The preliminary planning has already begun. This morning I again looked at a portion of the Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness (APW) on the topographical map. My heart jumped into my throat. I know that neighborhood during the winter.

Traveling the Continental Divide during the winter probably cannot be done successfully. My intent is to find out.

West Goat Summit: During the winter of 2007 I continued my winter treks in Montana's wildernesses. Anaconda-Pintlar became my focal point for crossing, but first there was a little climb to get done on the tallest of the Pintlars. Yeah, little. Read more.>
